First and foremost, I don't recommend the use of a Blogroll immediately. This isn't to say that I don't like them (even though I realize my site fails at using them) but instead it's because this technique centres almost exclusively around the use of them.

Step 1: No Blogroll

Step 2: 5 to 10 posts

This 2nd step is where you lay the ground work for how frequent you are going to post, what you're going to talk about, basically your blog's niche.

Step 3: Blogroll time!

Now that you've established a base of posts put up that blogroll. The reason is simple as I notice my behaviour and that of other bloggers. Once we get linked to wordpress or our own manual scrapping of the net will find that link. It'll let us know your blog exists. If you've got a nice, interesting post base already then it'll get you in our RSS reader.

You've been noticed. This isn't to say that you'll immediately get a wave of links from this, but you've found your way onto the scene regardless. You can further stroke your favourite blogger's epeen by linking to them in your actual posts. (not something to necessarily go overboard with though)

Step 4: Just keep posting

At the end of the day, your fellow bloggers are going to be a very small, albeit it very vocal so still valuable, but nonetheless a small part of your audience. So just keep posting, after all... content is king

note: If you've already started a blog, I do not recommend you remove your blogroll to try this technique. It can still be effective though when going into a new area of discussion to write about it a bit then add the links to the blogs that are part of that discussion area too. (same technique as above just on a smaller scale)

I would also suggest

Post consistently on a schedule (I fail at this), if you post mon, wed, fri keep doing so, if its once a day go for it, 1 post then 3 weeks then 1 post makes use less likely to check back unless its being linked elsewhere (or the post takes 3 weeks to read...).

Post in the same style (I hate thinking I will get a nice long article from an author, then getting 3 lines and a link , sometimes its nice, but if you feed us steak we want more).

Now to actually get readers, not sure how that one works.

Commenting on other blogs is pretty effective too. Many of the newer blogs I have on my blogroll I've discovered after they've commented on mine.

Whenever i get a comment from someone I don't know about I go and check their blog out. I'm just so curious (a racial thing about gnomes I guess).

Agreed, me too especially if they say something actually useful.

As to post length, I try to vary between short and long. That being said, the shorter a post is the more insightful, useful, entertaining, etc it's gotta be.

Thank goodness I only do long posts then , insightful and witty I think not.

So what is the "Blogroll" anyway? Is this a specific WordPress thing or is it just a special name for a list of links?

Secondly what do you mean by "linked" to WordPress?

A Blogroll is just a list of other blogs you read that your readers may enjoy as well. It's just a special name for the list of links, nothing Wordpress specific.

And when Veneretio said "linked by Wordpress" I believe he was referring to the fact that Wordpress, as well as most other blogging platforms, have some sort of tool that tells you when someone has linked to you.

I've recently set up WarAnvil.com with a few friends.

I'm looking for effective ways to contact the blogging community and get into some type of link exchange program. I have personally ran blogs in the past which has given me a fairly solid platform to use as a foundation for WarAnvil. But as ever the main problem is actually getting people to view our blog.

We want to get a fairly big team of writers onboard so content is flowing, I'm ultimately aiming at around 2-3 posts per day. This will obviously require a fairly big and active team of writers. We want to be by players, for players essentially.

If you guys like where our unique blog is going then don't be afraid to contact me so we can form up link exchanges, i damn well know I'm doing the same going around the blog community asking people the same thing (if i like the blog!)

I'm looking forward to becoming an active member of this forum to, it looks great.

I guess I'm in the same boat as Grim, trying to get known as widley as possible. I'm even running a posting competition to those that send in funny pics, etc. lol.

There's a few good ideas there. Just wondering, is there any advantage to using a blogroll rather than just text links to those you are doing link exchange with?

I do one post a day, (sometimes 2 - 3 if I have a lot on my mind). I also have another person that now blogs on my site, so people get two varieties of stories

As a reader, I won't randomly click on static links to other blogs, but if the blogroll lists the title of the blog's most recent post, there's a much better chance I will see a topic that catches my eye. I've found some fun blogs that way, but I really need to see those topic titles or I won't go. I already read about a dozen blogs so while I'm not against reading more blogs, I'm not actively looking for more to read either.

Besides that... another important thing to do is to ping aggregators. You can use these especially if you are using Blogspot (ranked based on my experience using them):

I've been blogging for about 5 years, I started playing WoW last December and started blogging about it about 2 weeks ago and I totally disagree with the tips in this thread!

1- Content! You want to get noticed! Have good content!! Know what you are talking about!!

2- Template! You don't need to be a website builder nerd to have a respectful template! It needs to be convivial and easy to read!

3- Claim your blog on blog directories like technorati. And interact with other bloggers. Use social networks like MyBlogLog, twitter.. Use services like pingomatic.com.

4- Blogroll, sure! But know how to use it! Don't just roll well known WoW blogs that are out there. Everyone knows about WoW insiders! Contact bloggers who are close to your content and link exchange with them! "I'll put a link to your blog on my blog if you put a link to my blog on your blog"

5- Good content!! Yes, again!

6- Comment on other WoW blogs! Commenting on other peoples blog is one of the most efficient way to get yourself noticed. Of course, the good content rules also apply here!

7- Something I don't have, SPELLCHECK! Don't post anything before doing a spellcheck! Make sure that everything is neat or you will lose notoriety no matter how good your content is! (I'm having terrible issue with English but believe me it was way worst years ago ^^)
