To tease or not to tease, that is the question. Whether it's better to add a click-through or more after the first couple of paragraphs, thereby keeping all your recent posts easily accessible, or if you serve your readers better by allowing the entire post to be pulled through various feeders. Ah, there's the rub.

Since I write long, rambling posts, this is frequent and personal problem. Sorry, USED to be such. I had an epiphany that I shall share.

The blog is mutable. Changeable. What you write is not etched in stone, nor even inked on paper. Take advantage of that fact.

Nowadays, when I first write an article I put the whole thing up, unbroken. Then, at (what used to be) regular intervals -- ideally for me the next day to ensure sufficient time that the feeds will have collected the entire post -- I go back and insert the break.

So, after my (now irregular) maintenance, people don't have to scroll for hours to get to the earlier but not yet off-front-page posts.

That's a damn good idea, Kirk.

Why do I always sound surprised? All your ideas are damn good.

This is something I noticed Ego Priest did a while ago and seems to work well for folks reading her posts through feed readers. Me? I'm a big fan of walls of text. I know it irritates some folks. And that's fine. My blog isn't designed to appease everyone. Avoiding extra mouse-clicks is just one of the many services I offer.

Yay for this ridiculously simple and BRILLIANT idea!
Thanks! I've been worrying about this far too much the past couple of days.

Oh, and I guess I should say that I don't worry about this myself right now, cause my blogger 'shorten the post' method doesn't prevent RSS feeds from having the whole thing.

But I bet this idea will be great when I switch to Wordpress.

While it's certainly good to keep links (thats what an archive is for), condensing the front page too much may lead to a very un-blog-like feeling.

People like seeing the interesting stuff right away, but hate scrolling.

So, instead of 20-50 posts on the front page, you could limit it to 5 posts, and have the rest available trough an archive link, or condensed link.

Honestly, I don't buy into this whole "people hate scrolling" thing. If I'm reading something interesting, I'm going to scroll to continue reading. I have never once been reading something and thought "What! I need to twitch my finger to continue? NO NO NO! This would be much better if I could instead click a link that would take me to the whole entry, reloading the whole page in the process! Forget this! This page, and its scrolling! Forget it!"

The "people hate scrolling" thing is a myth, a MYTH I TELL YOU.

Neah, i don't mind scolling so much, but there "is" a limit.
And it's not just to do with blogs.

If you load a blog with 400 posts, all on the first page, no limits, no caps..
Thats way over the top.

I don't mind long posts, but i hate it when blogs flood their front page with everything they ever posted from history.
2-6 pages the scroll is all fine.
200-300 is not.

I actually did this a couple times...then went on vacation or something, and got out of the habit. But it IS a good idea.

I thought I had a great solution at one point: An add-on that supposedly would allow a <!---MORE---> tag to be ignored in a feed-reader. So, you could have more articles in less space on the blog, but readers would still have TFA. Sadly, it didn't work for me. :(

The problem I think is not when the first post is new or interesting to me, then I don't mind scrolling down to read all of it.

However, when you visit a blog for the first time, or when you visit a prolific blogger, you might want to get a quick taste of what kind of articles there are if you don't want to read everything, and to have to scroll down page after page just to see if anything catches your eye is kind of annoying.

Much better then if you only see the first few paragraphs of each post, with a clickable option to read more, either on the same page or a new one.

Just a note to Kirk here: inserting a <!--more--> tag in your post doesn't break up your feed, at least not an atom feed. So the reworking 24h laters to leave your feeds time as you do it shouldn't actually be necessary.
