Online Friends -vs- Real Life Friends

I would like to suggest this a shared topic since I think a lot of the responses would be very interesting.

I plan on trying this one maybe next week. I got the idea after talking to someone at my work about a friend I "know" from gaming online with them for over 2 years but never met in real life. The person is having some family problems and it bothered me just as much as it would of if it were one of my friends I see everyday.

When I said this to the person at my work they looked at me like I was an alien. I am just wondering what my fellow gamers thoughts on this are.

I've always been of the opinion that a friend is a friend, no matter what the context, but I can understand how some people wouldn't necessarily see it that way. Maybe this is something I can touch on as well over the next week.

Thanks for the idea and I'll link it here when I've got it up!

I've had this idea floating about in my head for a little while now. But I haven't exactly taken the time to sort it all out. This will give me the motivation to put it all down. I'll link my thoughts after it's done as well.

By the way, I just want to point out that I looked up “friend” on Wikipedia. What I found was a definition for friendship; “Friendship is a term used to denote co-operative and supportive behavior between two or more humans.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friend

Given that this is true, then there are very few friends within the world of Azeroth. Sorry guys, all you elves, dwarves, gnomes, draenai, and horde players are screwed! :D

A friend is a friend is a friend. This would make another good topic. I had friends I've known 6 years through yahoo chat. When we found ourselves moving to their area (home is where the army sends us) they opened their doors to us and gave us a place to stay. I have another, a fellow military spouse, that I can call day or night. Yet I've never met her in person.

I know what you mean. I've been with my WoW guild for the past year and a half. And i've taken a liking to them, i mean I'm speaking to them in Vent, we're hanging together in-game and we're writing e-mails to each of us. Its a fun relationships if not a very serious one. I like my RL friends better because of the actual physical contact but its very different to befriend someone and never meet him.

We've arranged a number of "guild meets" where we had 15-25 guild members from the area, and all across europe come together.

A friend is a friend IMO, no matter how you met. I'm approaching my 1 year anniversary with my fiance, who I happened to have met on WoW. We knew each other for about 2 years before we met and moved in together a month later. Just goes to show...
