We're finally upgrading (after more than two years!) Flinthammer Hall, so naturally, I've plunged in with only a fleeting knowledge of CSS to hammer things into our own style.

http://www.flinthammer.org/

Right now, I've got two or three puzzlers:

1) Either I have to put in two sets of paragraph tags with a non-breaking spaces or the text for a post will begin up beside the title and comments tag. I can't figure out how to get the template to just say "enough, already, and go to the next line." (Yes, I already tried BR tags and gave up on that.)

2) Some posts have perfectly nice spacing and look nice throughout:

Others have a mysteriously huge space at the beginning, then have text crammed together without sufficient standard spacing between lines or paragraphs:

Naturally, they both look the same in Wordpress' HTML editor.

3) Wordpress' internal editor will show an image right-aligned, but it'll be left-aligned on the actual post, unless I just shove it into its own table and brute force it to the right instead. It's also ignoring the BORDER information unless it's in a table as well.

HELP! Any CSS gurus out there know what's going on?

The pre-modification theme is Brian Gardner's Blue Zinfandel.

From a quick glance at the path of the damned, your first text paragraph appears not to be a child of <p> but of the container <div id="contentmiddle">, that's why it doesn't use the right spacing. Try simply enclosing it in <p> and </p> markers in the code editor and you'll get it looking right.

For 1), have a look at how the loop is being set up in index.php and single.php. You have your generic container "contentmiddle" of which all your posts are direct descendants, with only the title separated in a contenttitle class. I think the main problem are the positioning rules set in contentmiddle which give you unwanted results for your individual posts.

What I suggest is to leave your column contentmiddle as is, but then encapsulate each post in another box, contententry, which has its own text and paragraph styling. You could even further separate a post title (contenttitle) from the post body if you want to make different line spacing rules or something.

For 3, once your post is complete, try entering the code editor, locate the <img> tag and insert style="float:right", see what happens. This may give strange results if you leave each post a direct descendant of contentmiddle, though.

Hope that helps.

PS - just in case, the addon colorzilla for firefox helps a lot finding out the box hierarchy visually without having to sift through the code, in case you didn't already know that ;)

The built-in WYSIWYG editor keeps stripping out the P tag. :(

Thanks for the help. I suspect it was a quirk of how it was structured.

I'm betting this is the answer. Unfortunately, my HTML larnin' stopped in 1999, other than learning how to do an iframe for the 1.0 version of Flinthammer Hall. (Well, really, that was the 2.0 version, but the 1.0 version was essentially unused and just a place for my wife's sig art.)

I'll work on this today, after raiding. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
